Mercy Children Home Construction Faces Financial Hurdles: Director Appeals for Support

August 28, 2024

The construction of the Mercy Children Home has begun to take shape in Machinjiri, where the organization purchased land in 2018. However, progress has been slow due to financial challenges. According to Simon Nkhambala, Director of the organization, the land remained idle until this year (2024), despite securing it in 2018 and completing the landscaping in 2019.

Currently, the project has reached the foundation level but has been halted due to a lack of funds. Nkhambala explained that the money raised through resource mobilization and small businesses that help sustain the organization’s daily operations was insufficient to continue with the construction.

“It’s unfortunate that the anticipated project, which could have saved us from the significant monthly expense of $250 for house rentals, has stalled due to a lack of funds. I wish for the project to be completed on time so that the children can have a place to call home,” he said. “Sometimes, our children may not even have enough food because the funds we receive are diverted to cover rent.”

Nkhambala is appealing to well-wishers for any support they can provide to help finish the project. “I plead with well-wishers to assist with the project, so that the money currently spent on rent can be used for other expenses like food and clothing, and our children can have a safe place to stay and focus on their education,” he added. The organization is seeking support in the form of money or construction materials such as cement, bricks, quarry, window frames, doors, and electrical materials.

The building, once completed, is expected to be 25 meters long and 14 meters wide and accommodate over fifty children. Currently, the organization houses over fourteen children at the center, with others residing outside.

Nkhambala emphasized the organization’s dedication to providing homes for homeless children. Since its inception a decade ago, Mercy Children Center has supported many children, some of whom are now in secondary school. He highlighted the organization’s strong track record of accountability, assuring that all donations and support will go directly toward the construction project, with complete transparency.
