In rural Malawi, a widow’s life is impossibly hard. When a husband dies โ to illness, to accident, to anything โ the family’s entire means of support often dies with him. Women are left alone with children, no income, and no way forward.
Mercy Children runs a project that changes that trajectory โ one goat at a time.
How it works
We organise widows into groups of 10, and we give each group 10 goats. The women care for the animals together. Within a year, the goats produce kids, then more kids. Soon, there’s milk for the children, meat for the family, and goats to sell โ and money to start small businesses, pay school fees, and buy food.
The numbers so far
- 10 goats, given to a group of 10 widows โ costs $270
- Within one to two years, most groups double their herd
- Women report being able to feed their children, pay school fees, and save money
$270. Ten women. Ten families. Years of change.
