Chimwemwe is nine years old. He lives in Chikwawa District, in a family of six children, and he’s supposed to be in Standard 4.

But Chimwemwe misses school often. When there’s no food at home, he can’t concentrate. When there are no shoes, he can’t walk to class. When his clothes are torn, he stays away out of shame.

His father died when Chimwemwe was in Standard 3 — and with him went the family’s main source of income. His mother now survives on subsistence farming, trying to feed six hungry mouths on whatever she can grow.

Education is the way out

Mercy Children has already stepped in with clothes and shoes for Chimwemwe so he can attend school. But he — and thousands like him in rural Malawi — need more: stable food, school fees, books, and ongoing support.

Poverty should not be the reason a child’s future ends. Education is the single greatest lever we have against it.
